A healthy spine helps provide shock absorption for the body. When we run, jump, or even walk, we place stress on the pelvis, hips, and legs. The intervertebral discs in the spine act as a cushion to absorb some of the force. If your spine is not healthy, you can develop degenerative disc disease and lose some natural shock absorption.

 

Promotes Stability:

Maintaining a healthy spine can improve balance and stability while in motion. It can help prevent falls and is also helpful for control and coordination. 

 

Helps Maintain Support:

Your spine holds you upright. It transfers the weight of the torso to the hips, pelvis, and legs. A healthy spine is essential to provide optimal support.

 

Prevents Future Back Pain:

One of the most important things a healthy spine does is prevent future back pain. As we age, the discs in our spine may wear out. Muscles in the spine may also get sore quickly. But the better spine health we maintain, the less pain and injuries we may develop.

Fortunately, we can largely control the health of our spine through the choices we make. Below are several tips to improve and maintain a healthy spine. 

 

#1) Be Mindful of Proper Posture

Many of us sit at a desk during the day and look down at a computer. Even if you have an active job, you may still spend time looking at your cell phone. When we are sitting and looking down at a computer or cell phone, it’s natural to slouch a little. But all that slouching can lead to problems with the discs in your spine. 

Try to be mindful of maintaining good posture. Remind yourself to sit up straight. Choose a good office chair that provides enough back support. Make adjustments to your chair or computer to make sure your eyes are level with the screen. Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid hunching. 

 

#2) Exercise

Exercise is beneficial for your entire body, including the spine. Whether you walk, practice yoga, or do strength training, exercise is good for overall health as well as strengthening the muscles around your spine. 
Be sure to include core exercises, such as planks and reverse crunches. A strong core protects your back and may reduce your risk of injury. 

It’s also beneficial to avoid sitting for long periods of time. Sitting for too long in one stretch of time may place stress on the discs and muscles in your spine, leading to pain and stiffness. If you have a desk job, try to get up and walk around or stretch for a few minutes every hour. 

 

#3) Wear Supportive Footwear

Supportive footwear is vital to keep your spine healthy. Footwear that does not fit well or provide support can have an impact on the force placed on your spine and also how you walk. Consider skipping high heels and choose cushioned soles that provide proper support. 

 

#4) Give Your Spine a Little TLC

Like any area of your body, the muscles and joints around your spine can become sore and achy. Pamper your spine every now and then. For example, soak in a tub with a pain-relieving bath bomb to help with any soreness. Select a bath bomb with ingredients like turmeric, arnica, and peppermint oil. Fill a tub with warm water, add the bath bomb, and relax. 

For a little more relaxation, consider getting occasional massages. A massage helps release tension from the muscles, and it also improves blood flow to the area. Plus, it is relaxing! 

 

#5) Pay Attention to Sleep Position

When you sleep, it gives your body a chance to rest and recharge. Choose a mattress that provides support without being too hard. Although personal preference can vary, most people sleep well with a moderately firm mattress. 

If you sleep on your back, put a pillow under your knees to decrease the stress on your lower back. If you sleep on your side, put a pillow in between your knees to keep your hips in proper alignment. 

 

#6) Maintain a Healthy Weight 

Being overweight can impact your overall health, and that includes your spine. Carrying around excess weight places added stress on your spine. If you are overweight, talk with your doctor about a safe weight loss plan.
