Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
Downward Facing Dog is a well-known pose that is perfect for stretching the feet. A good way to get the most out of the Downward-Facing Dog Pose is to be sure to arch your feet while extending your heel. Lowering your heels in this combination can be challenging if you’re new to yoga, but just stick with it. The results will be amazing if you do!
- Begin on your hands and knees, with your hands shoulder width apart and your knees aligned with your hips. Exhale and use your toes to lift your knees off the floor, keeping your knees bent and your heels off the floor. Push your body up, keeping your back and arms straight, to form a “V” shape with your body. Straighten your legs without locking your knees, and press your heels and palms equally into the floor.
- It may be difficult to straighten out your legs at first—that’s okay! Just keep practicing with knees bent to your comfort level. You will gain flexibility with time. You can use gentle pumping motions, alternating feet, to stretch your legs further.
