Today I Started Loving You Again
Written with his wife Bonnie Owens, and recorded as a B-side to his song, “The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde,” this country tune has gone down in history as one of the best love songs ever written (even though it failed to chart after its release). The song didn’t reach popularity until it was performed by Sammi Smith in 1975, and has since been covered by numerous artists including Kenny Rogers, Al Martino, Emmylou Harris, and Dolly Parton. The story for the writing of this song is that Merle asked Bonnie to go out and pick him up a cheeseburger, and by the time Bonnie returned, Merle had already written the lyrics. “I’m right back to where I’ve really always been, I got over you just long enough to let my heartache mend” sings the duo in this ode about finding the love we once had for someone special within ourselves.
