This event involves a certain number of calves and usually twice as many participants. The participants/scramblers are lined up as a herd of calves is released into the arena. The object is to capture one of the calves, put a halter on it, and bring it back to the winners square to receive their prize. The scrambler often uses the prize money to purchase a registered heifer, which the scrambler will care for and show in competitions the following year. The event is entertaining and sometimes hilarious to watch as scramblers attempt to round up their calf, and also helps to teach responsibility in caring and showing an animal after winning. Calf Scrambling has been around since the late 1800s and early 1900s and was made an official event in 1942 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
