“Whoopie Ti Yi Yo: Git Along Little Dogies”
“Git Along, Little Doggies” is infamous for representing the actual lifestyle of a cattle wrangler and/or cowboy. Although a younger generation might think of the song as being a little “campy,” the lyrics actually speak of the typical day in the life of a cattle driver, cowpuncher, and wrangler. Its origins stem from John Lomax’s Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, which was published in 1910. Artists who have covered the song include: Roy Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers, The Kingston Trio, Charlie Daniels, and Nickel Creek. Many people mistakenly hear the word “dogies” in the song for “doggies”; however, the term “dogie” refers to a young, female, motherless calf.
