Liberty Valance, a local gangster, constantly terrorizes the town. When Valance destroys the local newspaper office and attacks the editor, Stoddard challenges Valance in the street. Stoddard fires a shot and Valance falls dead. The story being told ends up with a possibly different conclusion about the events that happened that day and the events that took place. Produced for $3.2 million, it grossed $8 million, making it the 16th highest grossing film of 1962. When the movie was in production, there were numerous issues and moments of confrontation between the other actors, especially between Ford and John Wayne. However, it has since gone down in history as one of “The Duke’s” best performances.
