Hellgate Blue Ridge Mountains (Virginia)
So there is a very good reason this race is named “Hellgate.” We’re talking 66 miles of running in the middle of December, and elevation gaining over 13,000ft. The race starts at the stroke of midnight and runners are exposed to challenging hill climbs, twists and turns around thickets and vegetation, rivers, and other wilderness-like obstacles. Also, be prepared to trudge through snow and ice. This ultra-marathon accepts 140 lucky runners each year, all of whom are hand-picked by the race director, David Horton. Horton (who is a famous ultra-marathon runner and holds the Appalachian Trail Speed record) organized the race to “inspire humility” in those brave enough to try Hellgate. If you think you’re up for the challenge, there’s no reason not to apply; the bragging rights alone are worth it.
