Bodie, California

bodie-ghost-townBodie, California is a town that still ages silently today. It was founded in 1876 by W.S. Bodey during the better years of the Gold Rush. The once thriving population rose to 10,000 during the good years and many stores, businesses, churches, and facilities were built. However, activities and services started to vanish in the 1880s when nearby areas began promising more gold. The town continued in existence until the 1940s, when it was completely abandoned due to the mine being closed. Bodie’s alternate spelling from that of “Bodey” has been accredited to a mistake made by a painter. Today the town is a State Historic Park and holds 100 deserted building with the insides still in the same condition as the day they were forsaken. Spectators are only allowed to peer through the windows to witness the preserved, still-stocked stores, frozen in time. Legend has it that anyone who attempts to take anything from the stores or the town itself will be visited by a curse. That may just be a strategy to ward off looters, but do you REALLY want to find out?
