Spinal Injuries
Spinal Injuries are the most serious injuries to befall today’s farmer, it is often a result of repetitive tasks such as lifting, hauling, and working the spine in variable positions. Spinal injuries typically involve a disturbance with the intervertebral disc. These disc, which act as shock-absorbing cushions between vertebrae (the actual “bony” part of the spine) can actually move and causes the cartilage and tissue in the spine to “bulge” or “herniate.” When herniation occurs, pressure is placed on the spinal cord and/or surrounding nerves. When this happens it not only leaves a person in severe amounts of pain, but can even cause immobilization. Following is a list of ways to prevent spinal injury:
- If you have to be in the tractor all day, you should make sure your seat is comfortable and supportive, if it is not, invest in some cushioning that would provide you with adequate back support.
- Even during a daunting list of things to do, do not be afraid to give yourself a break from all the sitting and allow yourself to walk around and stretch your legs, hips, and back for a bit.
- It is imperative that you use proper lifting techniques, especially when lifting heavy objects. Always ensure that you:
- slightly bend your knees, hips, and back from the beginning
- Avoid leaning to the side or twisting your back
- Keep the load as close to your waist as possible
- Ask yourself if you can manage the weight alone or if you should wait and ask for some assistance
- Keep your head up in order to see ahead of yourself
- Maintain a healthy weight because extra weight puts added pressure on the back and spine
- Try to use good posture; walk with head and shoulders slightly back
