Big Sur International Marathon
Beginning in 1986 with 1,800 runners, this jog that includes the beautiful coast view on Highway 1, has now over 10,000 participants in all categories. This race is often called “one of the jewels of American running,” and has twice been named the “Best Destination Marathon in North America.” Not only will you get to run on a highway that millions of tourists visit just to drive on, but you will take in one of the best views of the Pacific Ocean and its jagged coastline has to offer. These reasons are enough to keep scenic runners coming back every year. The Full Marathon course may be a little difficult for the amateur runner since there are hills and strong winds that fight you along the way, and there’s a somewhat brutal climb up to Hurricane Point. If you’re not in California often, take the time to visit the neighboring cities of San Jose and San Francisco.
