Right at the top of Sand Mountain is one of the most iconic places in Jackson County - ‘Taco-Bet,’ a veritable paradise for sellers, traders, and bargain hunters from across the country. From live chickens to chicken biscuits, if you need it or want it, chances are you will find it here on the 26-acre property that’s open every Sunday along Alabama 40. Starting around the crack of dawn and ending around noon, thousands of visitors come each week
to scan yard sales, listen to farmers brag about prize roosters and to find a good bargain. Taking its name from the Cherokee phrase meaning, ‘God’s great mountain,’ Taco-Bet has been around since 1964, when the customs, food, music and dance of local Indian tribes were combined to create yearly festivals for the public.
The current owner, Jerry Thompson of Dutton, grew up on the mountain and still remembers them.
