The Assassination Attempt
While Teddy was running as a candidate for the Progressive Party in 1912, he was scheduled to speak in Milwaukee. However, something went awry on the way to the podium; he was shot. Saloonkeeper, John Schrank, pulled out a pistol and fired one off into Roosevelt’s chest. This shot would have been fatal, but Teddy had his speech in his breast pocket, which was thick enough to keep the bullet from doing more damage than it could have. You are probably thinking Teddy immediately went to the nearest hospital and rescheduled the speech: WRONG! Teddy went on to deliver the speech, with fragments of lead in his chest, for nearly an entire hour. Only after he was finished and stepped off stage, did he seek care at a nearby hospital.
