Foods and Supplements That Fight Inflammation
There are plenty of foods out there that are known to fight inflammation in almost every part of our body.
- Foods that are high in antioxidants are some of the best foods when it comes to battling inflammation. In 2012, the Oregon Health & Science University claimed that tart-cherries contain the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food.” If you have swelling or inflammation in your hands, researchers confirm that eating 1.5 cups of tart cherries, or drinking a cup of tart cherry juice, will provide tremendous anti-inflammatory benefits.
- An anti-inflammatory spice is Turmeric. This treasured spice is a major ingredient in Indian cuisines and is also used to make yellow mustard in the states. Turmeric is known to be a disease-preventative agent and regarded highly in the medical community as an anti-inflammatory agent. It is also able to treat or prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s, arthritis and cancer: “Turmeric has been recognized by scientists to hold incredible anti-inflammatory effects due to its active ingredient, curcumin, shielding the body against oxidative stress.”
- You can also combine honey and cinnamon powder to help relax the muscles in your hand since they also contain healing properties. Cinnamon itself is known as a great anti-inflammatory and mixing the two together can provide amazing results. You can make a tea out of the two elements, however the most direct approach is to mix 1 tablespoon of honey and a half-teaspoon of cinnamon powder and eat the mixture on an empty stomach in the morning.
- Focusing on Vitamin D levels is one of the best ways to fight inflammation. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to several inflammatory conditions; one being rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin D has been known to fight inflammation in diseases that involve aging. This is why it is important that we get enough vitamin D in our systems. As we get older we need more vitamin D to help keep inflammation from becoming overabundant; which could eventually lead to debilitation. Vitamin D can be found naturally in foods like fish, beef, eggs and other dairy products. If you feel as if you do not get enough vitamin D in your diet (or your diet restricts the foods you can eat that contain vitamin D) there are always supplements of vitamin D. These can be found at the pharmacy section at most department stores and are sold over the counter. They are fairly inexpensive and readily available.
- Omega-3 fatty acids are known to fight inflammation directly and can be found in oily fish, certain oils, walnuts, flaxseeds and soy products. If you do not have access to these types of foods often, consider taking omega-3 supplements. They can usually be found in the same aisle as the vitamin D.
