My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys (1991)
H. D. Dalton’s career is ruined after being gored by a bull so he returns home to his family farm. On his arrival, he discovers that the farm is abandoned, his father is in a nursing home, and his old girlfriend is a widowed mother. Trying to figure out a way to come up with the cash to keep from selling the farm and get his dad out of the nursing home, Dalton decides to partake in a rodeo contest in which he must ride 4 bulls for a total of 32 seconds. This was the last movie to be directed by Stuart Rosenberg (known for directing The Amityville Horror and Cool Hand Luke), and the film was given positive reception upon release. Legendary bull rider, Lane Frost, was originally supposed to perform the stunts for the protagonist H.D. Dalton (his wife, Kellie, was working as a stunt coordinator for the movie during the time of Lane’s death). Instead, Frost’s long-time friend, Tuff Hedeman, performed the stunt work for the film.
