Dislocated Shoulder
This usually happens when a rider is trying to break a fall with their hand, which puts a sudden amount of jarring pressure on the shoulder joint and dislocates it. It can also happen if a rider simply lands on their shoulder. After you have seen your doctor about the injury (if it happens, immediately go to the emergency room), you can use ice to keep the pain and swelling down, about 30 minutes every 4 hours or so. Make sure to keep the shoulder immobilized. This will prevent further damage from occurring. If you have a sling laying around somewhere it might be a good idea to put it on as you head out to go to the doctor. If you do not have one on hand then just try to not move the shoulder at all. DO NOT try to “pop” the shoulder back into place by yourself and do not let anyone else try to. Numerous people cause further injury to their shoulders this way. A trained physician will sedate the area and often the shoulder will find its way back into place. If not, the doctor will gently move the shoulder back into place. Preventing shoulder dislocation or other shoulder injuries can be prevented by strengthening the muscles in the shoulders and performing a few proper stretches for the area before riding activities.
