Traveller
Commanding Confederate Officer General Robert E. Lee’s favorite horse was a grey American Saddlebred called Traveller. He was originally named “Greenbrier” but re-titled after his purchase by Lee in 1862. The horse accompanied Lee in several battles and was known for his speed, brawn, and brevity on the battlefield. The end came for Traveller in 1871, after he developed tetanus and was mercifully killed by a firearm to relieve the pain from the disease of which there was no treatment.
