Roosevelt was a boxer for Harvard University’s intramural lightweight championship and even continued to box recreationally during his presidency. After sparring with various friends and other professional boxers, a punch from an artillery officer damaged a blood vessel and left him blind in his left eye. Some say it was a detached retina, but after that incident he quit boxing and turned to practicing jiu-jitsu.
