Topical Analgesics
Before you start a long distance run, consider applying a topical ointment or analgesic before you start. This is an especially good idea if you have problems with inflammation while you run. Those with shin splints or Achilles tendonitis, commonly use topical analgesics before and after they run. There are a lot of products that only contain menthol; these are fine and all, but some of them don’t contain any anti-inflammatory ingredients. Look for products that also carry ingredients like: Aloe Vera, capsicum, Arnica and Chondroitin. These types of solutions all fight inflammation fast, and at its source. If you’re lucky, you can find a topical lotion that contains Emu oil. Emu oil is also known for its’ transdermal properties, meaning it has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin and carry along other ingredients that contain anti-inflammatory properties. You can also use topical analgesics for injuries such as sprains, stress fractures, arthritis, and specific conditions such as plantar fasciitis and IT band syndrome. In the months that you are preparing for your marathon, topical pain relievers can help keep you on your feet for training, especially if you are experiencing pain from any common running injury or overusing a specific body part during your training.
