Rest
This is probably the most difficult thing to do for athletes. Athletes are typically focused on improving their performance and maximizing their training time, so the idea of “taking a few days off” doesn’t quite seem to fit into an athlete’s routine. However, proper rest is probably the most crucial ingredient in successfully treating AT. Since the primary cause of AT is overuse, over-pronation or unnecessary stress placed on the Achilles tendon, taking a week off can do wonders to help the area heal faster and return to normal. As inflammation will most likely be present in cases of AT, it is important for nature to takes its course and allow blood flow to reach the afflicted area and begin the healing process. During periods of rest, you can reduce the pain caused by inflammation by not placing added tension on the area. During rest, the application of ice packs can help reduce the inflammation and provide temporary relief. It is best to apply ice when you don’t have to be on your feet for a few hours. Another great way to reduce inflammation while resting is the application of topical analgesic/pain relief solutions. These products typically come in the form of creams or lotions and have the ability to reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by AT and also reduce the amount of pain. Topical solutions that carry menthol are most common; however, other products contain additional ingredients that may actually assist in reducing inflammation faster. Products that contain Emu oil transfer their ingredients to the area of pain faster, thanks to the transdermal properties that Emu oil contains. Products that carry Capsaicin, Aloe Vera, Glucosamine, Arnica, Chondroitin and other ingredients are on the rise for treating inflammation. Applying topical analgesics and resting go hand-in-hand as it is better to use these applications when the affected area is not active. There are products that are made to be used during running or activity, so search around until you find what works best for you.
