9 Foods That Cause Inflammation and Pain

Fried food and sweets cause inflammation and pain

Not feeling well? It might be the food you are eating. Here are 9 foods that cause inflammation and pain.

Food and Inflammation

Eating food is a no-brainer - we eat food and we live. But, it is not quite that simple for everyone. Everyone’s body is unique and might react differently to certain foods. Some foods are known for the potential to cause inflammation, which can lead to the degeneration of the body’s cells and cause certain people to experience gastrointestinal upset, mood disorders, skin issues, chronic pain, brain fog, and many other conditions.

Inflammation is most often caused by a condition called leaky gut. Leaky gut causes large molecules of food to absorb through the gut lining and prematurely seep into the bloodstream. The body responds to this by sending in “soldiers” to fight these invading molecules and remove them from the system as if it were a virus. This process creates inflammation in the body. Professionals also believe that certain foods feed viruses that are harbored in the body, causing inflammation and irritating the cells that the virus inhabits.

9 Foods That Cause Inflammation and Pain:

  1. Gluten
  2. Dairy
  3. Refined sugar (sugar, high fructose corn syrup)
  4. Fried foods
  5. Refined vegetable oils and margarine
  6. Artificial Sweeteners
  7. Processed meats (salami, sausage, bologna, hotdogs)
  8. Nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant)
  9. Excessive alcohol consumption

If you suspect based on symptoms you experience or have confirmed through blood work that you have an issue with inflammation, then it is best to try eliminating these foods from your diet. This will give you a chance to see if you notice an improvement in your symptoms. It can take some time to figure out, so try to be patient.

Plan of Action

Total elimination of inflammation-causing foods is the first step to reducing inflammation in the body. If you keep eating the foods that cause inflammation, you will not effectively eliminate your inflammation, and the condition(s) you experience as a result will not go away.

Every bite taken is a choice, and will directly impact how healthy or unhealthy we are. This is a key piece of information to remember on the journey to better health.

Centering your diet on whole plant foods, in as close to their natural state as possible, is a good second step to reduce inflammation in your body. The majority of your diet should come from fruits and vegetables. Next, add in things like small cold water fish, sprouted beans and legumes, fresh organic pasture or grass-fed meats (excluding things like salami due to the preservatives), coconut oil, fresh and dried herbs, garlic, and onion. Including some Celtic salt for flavoring is not a bad idea, and on occasion, you can also safely drink one glass of wine; it will not negatively affect your ability to heal.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Certain foods are particularly important to include in your diet if you are trying to reduce inflammation in your body. These foods are anti-inflammatory, which means they do not cause inflammation and they also help fight existing inflammation within the body! They include:

  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Cranberries
  • Goji berries
  • Kidney beans
  • Cilantro
  • Artichoke
  • Leafy greens
  • Turmeric (which is especially beneficial for people with chronic pain issues.)
  • Thyme
  • Oregano

Stay Hydrated

It is also important to drink lots of pure and clean water to help your body detoxify. As you eliminate the inflammation-causing foods from your diet your body will release toxins and any other bad things.
Every cell in our body contains water, so it’s important to supply the body with a steady stream of fresh water to help replenish all of those cells.

Final Thoughts

Making changes to the way you eat can be hard. But if you are suffering from a health condition or chronic pain, then making changes in the foods you eat can be a game changer. Adjusting your diet could mean the difference between being able to live a full and enjoyable life or one filled with pain.

Once you master a few new staple recipes it will feel like you have always eaten this way. You will start to love it, especially if you feel better!
