“The Last Cowboy Song” -The Highwaymen

the-highwaymenThis song is an ode to the days of the cowboy that have gone by and is a sentiment to what it truly meant. The song was written by Ed Bruce and performed and released by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash in the country super-group The Highwaymen in 1985. The song held relative success, but most importantly, it told a tale of America’s pastime in which life was simpler and how modernization of society is responsible for depleting the cowboy spirit and way of life. It may seem like a sad song to deal with, but the nostalgia that the four singers describe gives you a sense of longing for a time where we weren’t surrounded by the hustle and bustle of today’s world. It is sang beautifully with deep harmonies and a haunting spoken word contributed by Johnny Cash.
