Pain from muscle strain can ruin your race timeMuscle strain is caused by a variety of issues. Muscle strains can occur in any region or muscle group throughout the body. They range from minor to severe, and if ignored, will intensify. For Runners, the most common muscle groups affected by strain are the hamstrings, calves, groins, and lower back muscles. Improper stretching and inadequate flexibility cause a high number of muscle strains. They are the result of either overuse, improper use, or a specific trauma. Someone experiencing a muscle strain will notice bruising around the affected area, as well as increased sensitivity. Muscle strains should be treated with care, if one fails to address this form of injury it can result in a severe pull, or worse, a full tear. It is imperative to listen to your body's warning sign to ensure that the effects of a muscle strain are thwarted prior to resulting in a severe injury that will cause a runner to cease training. Many runners have turned to yoga as a means to prevent and rehabilitate muscle strains.
