Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

butch-cassidy-and-the-sundance-kidSmooth-talking Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and marksman “the Sundance Kid” (Robert Redford) pair up in their Hole-in-the-Wall Gang and plan to rob a Union Pacific train not once, but twice. Things go good on the first run, but the second leads to a pursuit which eventually causes the two outlaws to abscond to Bolivia with Sundance’s lover Etta Place (Katharine Ross). The story continues as the duo tries to continue their robbing and bandit ways in late 19th century Bolivia and (without giving away too much) ultimately find themselves in trouble again. The film held universal acclaim and audiences loved the charming dialogue shared between Newman and Redford. The year it was released it was the highest grossing film and won four Academy Awards. William Goldman won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay

Fun Facts: Lula Parker Betenson, who was a sister of the real Butch Cassidy, often visited the set during production. During downtime in shooting, she would tell stories about her brother's adventures and was happy and amazed at how accurately the script (and Newman’s acting) portrayed her brother.

- All the Bolivia scenes were actually filmed in Mexico. Almost the entire cast, crew, and the director, came down with what is comically called “Montezuma's Revenge” (diarrhea and stomach problems caused by drinking polluted water in Mexico). Only Robert Redford, Paul Newman, and Katharine Ross were unaffected by the illness, due to the fact that they refused to drink the water catered on the set and only drank soda and alcohol for the entire shooting process.

-This was one of Sam Elliott’s Feature film debuts as “card player #2.”

-Dustin Hoffman was also considered for the role of Butch Cassidy.
