Unforgiven

unforgivenIn the town of Big Whisky, two cowboys rough-up and stab a saloon girl one night over a quarrel. The Sheriff Little Bill (Gene Hackman) does very little about it and the girls decide they should take vengeance in the form of a hired gun to kill those responsible. A sharpshooter from Kansas known as “the Schofield Kid” (Jaimz Woolvett) accepts the job and tries to recruit an old friend Bill Munny (Clint Eastwood) who has given up on a life of killing other men. The Kid finally convinces Munny as his farm is doing poorly, his kids are suffering from impoverishment, and he could use the $1000 ($500 a piece) that the saloon girls have offered. Munny requests the presence of an old friend Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) who was also an experienced gunfighter in his day. The movie plays out and allows the audience to determine the evils that exist between the characters. It also reveals how good and bad can be blurred in-between the actions of violence. Clint Eastwood directed and starred in the film. The movie had a welcoming reception and won four Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director (Clint Eastwood), Best Supporting Actor (Gene Hackman), and Best Film Editing. Clint Eastwood was also nominated for Best Actor and the film won two Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Again, Hackman).

Fun Facts:  -Apparently the script floated around the Hollywood scene for nearly 20 years before anything was produced from it.  Gene Hackman read the script and rejected the role. He was later convinced by Clint Eastwood (who had owned the rights to the script for some time) to play the character Bill Munny.

- To maintain the “authentic atmosphere,” no motorized vehicles were permitted on the set of the town, Big Whisky.
