Monarch Lake Trails, Indian Peaks Wilderness (Monarch Lake/Granby, CO)
Located east of Lake Granby, Colorado, Monarch Lake is known to attract hikers, runners, and especially horseback riders. The Monarch Lake Trailhead begins on the north shore of Monarch Lake and follows a mile long path to the lake’s inlet, which is where you enter the forest of Indian Peaks Wilderness. Most of the lake’s shore is accessible to fish for several different species of trout, as well as plenty of wildlife to view as you make your way through the forest. The towering pines that line the shore of Monarch lake are home to a variety of bird species: a must see for birdwatchers and ornithologists. If you decide to travel further along the trail, the Cascade Creek Trail/Arapaho Pass Split will lead you through 1.6 miles of more challenging and rugged terrain. Take this trail for a good four miles and loop back to the beginning of Monarch Lake, you won’t be disappointed with the spectacular landscape that the west side of the Continental Divide has to offer!
