The Duke of Wellington returned from Waterloo on the back of Copenhagen. When the duke gave Copenhagen a pat on the back as a celebratory gesture, the horse attempted to kick him in the head. Keep in mind the horse just got back from keeping his owner safe from gun fire and cannonballs, so the gesture was probably not acknowledged by Copenhagen as congratulatory. In his later years, Copenhagen was very friendly and loved by all. He would approach strangers to search for treats and allow the local women to remove parts of his mane to turn into bracelets. When he passed away, some jerk stole one of his hooves, but it was promptly returned and made into an inkstand (nice treatment for a brave and endearing war horse, right?). In the end, his head was cast in bronze and put on display at Wellington College.
