Hydrotherapy (or Contrast Bath)
Hydrotherapy is a tried and tested method of relieving pain in joints and muscles, and is exceptionally good for relieving arthritis conditions. It works by using a cold bath and a hot bath. You can also do this regularly to prevent pain because it improves the flow of blood to the joints.
For this, you will need 2 containers large enough to fill with water and dip both hands into, for example, 2 buckets.
Here is how to use hydrotherapy to prevent and relieve hand pain:
- Fill one bucket with hot water which is around 100°F (38°C) and the other bucket with cold water around 50°F (10°C).
- Submerge both hands to just above your wrists into the hot water and keep for 4 minutes.
- Then submerge both hands in the cold water for 1-2 minutes.
- Repeat for 4 times, finishing off with cold water.
This method to relieve and prevent pain has also been scientifically tested and proven to be effective with people who suffer from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
