Anti-Inflammatory Use During Running
Inflammation is a part of the healing process for our muscles. When we exercise, especially when we run or jog, we create tiny “micro-tears” in our muscles which is a normal process for building stronger muscles. When these micro-tears occur, your body reacts by sending more blood, oxygen, and nutrients to that area. Taking anti-inflammatory medication before running, interferes with this natural process and can even inhibit the body from sending proper blood and oxygen to the damaged site so that it may heal properly. One specific study on the effects of Ibuprofen on skeletal muscle demonstrated that “taking ibuprofen during endurance training canceled running-distance-dependent adaptations in skeletal muscle.” Other studies have shown that using NSAIDs after exercise slowed down the healing process for the muscles, tissues, ligaments and bones.
