How to Motivate YourselfMotivation is defined by the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. No matter who you are, how successful you are, what you have accomplished, the magnitude of your goals or your enthusiasm to reach them, there are times when you will lack motivation. Everyone has a point in time where they feel paralyzed with no desire to do anything at all. This is what has been coined as the ugly phrase, "lack of motivation." Absence of motivation leads to procrastination, reluctance, and ultimately unhappiness.

This sounds like a dead-end street, doesn't it? But it is quite the opposite- you have control over your flow of motivation; you just have to harness it.

So what can you do when you have misplaced your motivation?

1. Look for it!

Take a break from the task at hand. Enjoy some time outside. Dance in the kitchen. Relax. And THEN get back to it. Remember: it is not a sprint, it's a marathon.

2. Act like it!

Although you have established that you aren't feeling very enthusiastic or motivated, pretend that you are. Remember what Henry Ford once said, "Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right."

3. Do Not Fear Failure!

Instead of concentrating on a negative outcome, redefine failure as an opportunity to learn something and to do things differently. If everyone were to give up once they failed, most of the people we look up to today wouldn't have become the role models they are. Something to keep in mind: Walt Disney was fired for lacking imagination. Oprah Winfrey was publicly fired from a job as a television anchor. Even Thomas Edison was told he was "too stupid to learn anything" from his teachers. These are only a few names of the many who have faced failure yet harnessed motivation to succeed.

4. Allow Yourself to be Motivated!

Read a book or watch a movie. Listen to music or a podcast. Find content that is inspirational to you. Learn from it and grow from it.

5. Treat Yourself the Way You’d Want Others to Treat You

Yes, that's right, even when you feel close to giving up. Give yourself positive reinforcement. Love yourself up and give yourself credit, no matter what you have or have not accomplished. Focusing on the positive, rather than the negative, feeds motivation to grow.

6. Practice Makes Perfect.

Find something that fires you up and do it everyday. Passion is a powerful force behind motivation. Just like Zig Ziglar said, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

7. Tell the World!

Aside from the importance of finding a support system (which is crucial), talk about it with everyone. When you have plans to do something you've never done before, a lot of concentration and energy is invested in the task. Share it! Keep it in the forefront of your mind and build excitement around it. Your enthusiasm will effortlessly turn it motivation for yourself.

Tips to Get Motivated8. Review, Refine, Make Reality.

When things feel out of reach, assess whether your goals fit into the S.M.A.R.T. structure. Establish if your goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Review your goals, refine your plans, and make your dreams a reality. When you give your ideas structure, you are put action to the driving force of the motivation that is behind them.
