better-posture-drivingThe British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has done the math when it comes to driving and posture problems, finding that around 32,000 people visit a chiropractor each month with injuries that are aggravated, or caused by, poor driving posture. Most people spend hours every week (if not every day) driving and sitting in a truck or car seat. Overtime, if you are driving with poor posture, you increase your risk of developing painful conditions in the muscles and bones. Just as those with certain occupations may require them to sit in an office chair for hours on end, those who spend most of their day driving may experience painful issues that arise from improper posture.

To make things easier on your spine, arms, legs, and other parts of your body, there are a list of things to consider every day while driving.

  • The car seat should be slightly reclining in the backwards position during driving operations.
  • Your back should be spread evenly and flat against the seat.
  • Your elbows need to maintain a relaxed position and angle while holding on to the steering wheel.
  • Keeping your hands at 8 o’clock and 4 o’clock, may be a better method than the known 10-2 method. It not only relaxes the shoulders, but is often a safer position for air bag deployment
  • The headrest should support the spine, void of any misalignment of the neck, shoulders, and spine.
  • The lower back must have lumbar support, or some form of support, that keeps the spine from curving while driving. Pads, rolled towels, and other means of lower back support can help remedy any issues.
  • The lower seat should be properly adjusted so that your legs reach the gas and brake pedals comfortably. Improper distance to these pedals may result in soreness or cramping.
  • The seatbelt should always drag across the top of your shoulder. Never allow the seatbelt to rub against the neck or side of the arm.
  • After all these measures have been followed, then you can adjust the mirrors and other driving accessories before you take off. Adjusting mirrors after these steps will let you know if you change positions or slump in the seat while driving, because your mirror views will change.
